What is the Nuvenar Word to PDF tool?

Nuvenar Word to PDF is a free converter that turns .docx (and .odt) files into clean, standards-compliant PDFs. It uses the open-source LibreOffice engine running server-side in our UK datacenter, the same engine that powers most enterprise document-conversion APIs. Files are deleted within 5 minutes of conversion. No watermark, no signup, no email required.

When to use Word to PDF

  • Sending a contract or proposal: PDF is the universal standard for documents that should not be edited in transit.
  • Submitting a CV: almost every UK job application portal asks for PDF.
  • Archiving documents: PDF/A is the ISO standard for long-term document storage.
  • Printing reliably: PDFs render the same on every printer; .docx files can shift layout depending on installed fonts.
  • Email attachments: PDFs are smaller than .docx for image-heavy documents and recipients always have a reader installed.

How Word to PDF works

When you upload a .docx, the file is sent over HTTPS to our UK datacenter, written to a temporary working directory, and passed to a headless LibreOffice instance with the --convert-to pdf flag. LibreOffice opens the document, applies the styles, embeds the fonts, and emits a PDF 1.7 file. The PDF is returned to your browser as a download. The source .docx and the generated PDF are both deleted within 5 minutes by a cleanup cron. We log file size and processing time for billing; we do not log file contents.

Word to PDF vs alternatives

Most converters produce visually identical output for simple documents because they all use one of three engines (LibreOffice, Microsoft Office Online API, or a proprietary Adobe pipeline). The real differentiators: server location, retention policy, daily caps, and price.

Privacy and security

Word to PDF requires server-side processing. LibreOffice is a 300 MB native binary that cannot run in a browser tab, and porting it to JavaScript would produce a tool that takes minutes instead of seconds. We made the trade-off deliberately: server-side gives you faster, higher-quality conversion. To compensate, we host in a UK datacenter (no cross-border transfer for UK customers), delete files within 5 minutes, and do not log file contents. For tools that genuinely can run client-side, see our browser-side merge PDF and compress PDF.

Common use cases by profession

  • Accountants: convert engagement letters and management accounts from Word to PDF before sending to clients or HMRC.
  • Solicitors: turn draft contracts into PDFs for signature flows where edits should be blocked.
  • Consultants: proposal and SOW exports for client portals that only accept PDF.
  • Recruiters and candidates: CV submission to applicant tracking systems that auto-reject .docx.
  • Students: assignment submission via Turnitin or Moodle, which prefer PDF for plagiarism checking.
  • HR teams: contracts, NDAs, and policies for new-hire packs distributed as locked PDFs.

What is included free vs Tools Pro

Free: up to 20 pages per conversion, unlimited conversions per day, no watermark, no signup. Tools Pro at £9/mo: unlimited page count, priority conversion queue, and access to every other Nuvenar tool including PDF to Word, PDF to Excel, and the full PDF toolkit.

Limitations and edge cases

  • Old .doc files: not supported. Convert to .docx first using any modern word processor.
  • Macros and ActiveX controls: stripped from the output PDF. Macros do not exist in PDF format.
  • Linked external files: embedded Excel charts, OLE objects, or linked images may render as static snapshots or placeholders.
  • Custom fonts: rare or paid-foundry fonts are substituted with the closest match if not bundled with LibreOffice. For mission-critical brand typography, embed fonts in Word first or use the Word built-in export.
  • Tracked changes: rendered as accepted by default. Display markup in Word first if you want changes visible in the PDF.
  • Password-protected .docx: not supported. Remove the password in Word or Pages first.
FAQ

How do I convert Word to PDF for free?

Drop your .docx file into the tool above and click Convert. You get back a clean PDF in about 3 to 5 seconds. No signup, no email, no watermark on the output. Free covers documents up to 20 pages; Tools Pro at £9/mo removes the cap.

Does this preserve fonts?

Yes for any common font (Calibri, Arial, Times New Roman, Helvetica, Georgia, Verdana, and most Google Fonts). LibreOffice ships with hundreds of font substitutes and embeds them in the output PDF so the document renders identically on any reader. Truly custom typeface files (a paid foundry font you licensed for one project) get substituted with the closest match.

What about embedded images and tables?

Images, tables, headers, footers, page numbers, footnotes, hyperlinks, and bookmarks all carry over to the PDF. Tracked changes are accepted and rendered as final text by default. If you want tracked changes visible in the PDF, accept them or display them as markup in Word first, then convert.

Is my .docx uploaded?

Yes, to our UK datacenter. The file is processed by LibreOffice running headless, the PDF is returned to you, and both the source .docx and the output PDF are deleted within 5 minutes. We do not log file contents, only file size and conversion duration for billing.

What is the free tier limit?

Up to 20 pages per conversion on free, unlimited conversions per day, no watermark. Tools Pro at £9/mo removes the page limit. Smallpdf charges €9/mo with 2 tasks/day on free, iLovePDF €6/mo with a 25 MB cap, Adobe Acrobat Online £15.17/mo plus VAT.

Does this support old .doc files?

No, only .docx (Word 2007 and later). If you have a .doc file, open it in Word, Google Docs, Pages, or LibreOffice and Save As .docx first. Almost every modern word processor reads .doc but writes .docx by default, so the upgrade is usually a single save.

How is this different from Word's built-in Save As PDF?

Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Pages, and LibreOffice all export to PDF natively, and for most documents the result is identical to ours. Use this tool when: you do not have Word installed on the device you are working from, you are on a Chromebook or iPad without a full Office app, you received a .docx and need a PDF immediately without opening the file first, or you want a consistent rendering engine across your team regardless of who has what version of Office.

Why use this if Microsoft Word can already do it?

Because Microsoft Word is £6.99/mo per user (Microsoft 365 Basic). If your team converts a few .docx files a week and you do not need the rest of Office, paying nothing for this tool plus £9/mo for Tools Pro is roughly a quarter of the all-in Office cost and covers 30+ other PDF and business tools.

Does this work for Google Docs files?

Indirectly. Google Docs files are not .docx natively. Open the document in Google Docs, choose File, Download, Microsoft Word (.docx), then upload that file here. Or just use Google Docs' built-in PDF export (File, Download, PDF Document); the output is identical to what this tool would produce.

What about Apple Pages?

Pages files are not .docx natively. Open the document in Pages, choose File, Export To, Word, and upload the resulting .docx here. Alternatively, Pages exports to PDF directly (File, Export To, PDF), which avoids the round trip entirely.

Can I convert .odt files?

Yes. LibreOffice handles OpenDocument Text natively, so .odt files convert with the same fidelity as .docx. Just upload an .odt and the tool produces a PDF the same way.

How long does conversion take?

Most documents up to 20 pages finish in 2 to 5 seconds. A 100-page document takes around 10 to 15 seconds. Image-heavy documents are slower because each image gets re-encoded for the PDF.

What about iPhone or iPad?

Yes. The tool works in Safari on iOS, Chrome on iPad, and any modern mobile browser. Upload from Files, iCloud Drive, OneDrive, or Google Drive. The PDF downloads to Files and opens in any PDF reader.

Why does my PDF look slightly different from the Word document?

Three reasons. First, fonts: if your .docx uses a font we do not have installed, LibreOffice substitutes the closest match, which can shift line breaks. Second, page settings: if your Word document targets a US Letter page but the default render uses A4, margins shift. Third, complex layout: floating text boxes, watermarks behind text, and macros do not always survive the conversion. For most business documents the output is visually identical.

Need to convert long documents?

Tools Pro at £9/mo removes the 20-page limit on Word to PDF and unlocks every other Nuvenar tool, including PDF to Word, PDF to Excel, and 25+ business calculators.
