What is the Nuvenar PDF to Excel tool?
Nuvenar PDF to Excel is a free converter that turns PDF tables into editable .xlsx spreadsheets. It uses the open-source LibreOffice engine running server-side in our UK datacenter. Each detected table in the PDF becomes a sheet in the output workbook. Files are deleted within 5 minutes of conversion. No watermark, no signup, no email required.
When to use PDF to Excel
- Reconciling bank statements: turn a PDF statement into rows you can sort, filter, and pivot.
- Pulling data from supplier invoices: get line items into Excel for matching against purchase orders.
- Extracting financial reports: P&L, balance sheet, or trial balance PDFs from accounting software into editable cells.
- Migrating data: when the only export option from a legacy tool is PDF, this is the bridge to a modern spreadsheet.
- Analysing competitor pricing: turn a published price-list PDF into rows for comparison.
How PDF to Excel works
When you upload a PDF, the file is sent over HTTPS to our UK datacenter, written to a temporary working directory, and passed to a headless LibreOffice instance with the --convert-to xlsx flag. LibreOffice parses the PDF, identifies regions of text laid out in rows and columns, and emits an Office Open XML spreadsheet. The .xlsx is returned to your browser as a download. The source PDF and the generated spreadsheet are both deleted within 5 minutes by a cleanup cron. We log file size and processing time for billing; we do not log file contents.
PDF to Excel vs alternatives
PDF to Excel is the hardest conversion in this category because PDF has no native concept of a table. Quality varies more between tools than for any other conversion type. Adobe Acrobat Pro is generally the gold standard, our tool and Smallpdf are close behind for clean source PDFs, and PDF24 is broadly comparable for simple tables. The real differentiators: server location, retention policy, daily caps, and price.
| Tool | Server location | Watermark on free | Free tier limit | Paid price | Privacy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nuvenar PDF to Excel | UK datacenter | No watermark | 5 pages, no daily cap | £9/mo unlimited | Files deleted within 5 min |
| Smallpdf | Switzerland | No watermark, 2 tasks/day | 2 conversions/day | €9/mo | Files deleted within 60 min |
| iLovePDF | Spain | No watermark | 25 MB upload cap | €6/mo | Files deleted within 2 hours |
| Adobe Acrobat Online | USA | No watermark, 2 uses/day cap | 2 conversions/day with Adobe ID | £15.17/mo + VAT | Files retained 24 hours |
| PDF24 Online | Germany | No watermark, ad-supported | Free, ad-supported | Free | Files deleted on download |
Privacy and security
PDF to Excel requires server-side processing. The table-detection logic in LibreOffice is a 300 MB native binary that cannot run in a browser tab. We made the trade-off deliberately: server-side gives you faster, higher-quality conversion than any JavaScript port could. To compensate, we host in a UK datacenter (no cross-border data transfer for UK customers), delete files within 5 minutes, and do not log file contents. Bank statements, supplier invoices, and financial reports are exactly the kind of data UK GDPR covers tightly; our DPA documents the processing relationship for compliance.
Common use cases by profession
- Accountants and bookkeepers: bank statement extraction for monthly reconciliation in Xero, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent.
- Finance teams: pulling supplier invoice line items into Excel for purchase-order matching.
- Consultants: extracting tables from market-research PDFs into Excel for analysis.
- Solicitors: turning expert-witness financial reports into editable workings for cross-examination prep.
- Property and conveyancing: converting service-charge accounts and management-pack tables for client review.
- Students and researchers: pulling data tables from academic papers into Excel or Google Sheets for re-analysis.
What is included free vs Tools Pro
Free: up to 5 pages per conversion, unlimited conversions per day, no watermark, no signup. Tools Pro at £9/mo: unlimited page count, priority conversion queue, and access to every other Nuvenar tool including PDF to Word, Word to PDF, and the full PDF toolkit.
Limitations and edge cases
- Scanned PDFs: the engine has no text to extract. Run our OCR PDF tool first to add a real text layer.
- Loose layouts: PDFs where text is positioned to look like a table but has no underlying table structure often produce messy output. Clean up in Excel.
- Merged cells and nested tables: hit-and-miss. Simple flat tables convert cleanly; complex layouts may fragment.
- Tables spanning multiple pages: may convert as separate sheets or as one sheet with the header repeating; depends on the source.
- Formulas: not preserved. PDFs store rendered values, not formulas. Ask for the source spreadsheet if you need the maths.
- Password-protected PDFs: not supported. Use our unlock PDF tool first.
