What is the Nuvenar PDF to Excel tool?

Nuvenar PDF to Excel is a free converter that turns PDF tables into editable .xlsx spreadsheets. It uses the open-source LibreOffice engine running server-side in our UK datacenter. Each detected table in the PDF becomes a sheet in the output workbook. Files are deleted within 5 minutes of conversion. No watermark, no signup, no email required.

How PDF to Excel works

When you upload a PDF, the file is sent over HTTPS to our UK datacenter, written to a temporary working directory, and passed to a headless LibreOffice instance with the --convert-to xlsx flag. LibreOffice parses the PDF, identifies regions of text laid out in rows and columns, and emits an Office Open XML spreadsheet. The .xlsx is returned to your browser as a download. The source PDF and the generated spreadsheet are both deleted within 5 minutes by a cleanup cron. We log file size and processing time for billing; we do not log file contents.

PDF to Excel vs alternatives

PDF to Excel is the hardest conversion in this category because PDF has no native concept of a table. Quality varies more between tools than for any other conversion type. Adobe Acrobat Pro is generally the gold standard, our tool and Smallpdf are close behind for clean source PDFs, and PDF24 is broadly comparable for simple tables. The real differentiators: server location, retention policy, daily caps, and price.

Privacy and security

PDF to Excel requires server-side processing. The table-detection logic in LibreOffice is a 300 MB native binary that cannot run in a browser tab. We made the trade-off deliberately: server-side gives you faster, higher-quality conversion than any JavaScript port could. To compensate, we host in a UK datacenter (no cross-border data transfer for UK customers), delete files within 5 minutes, and do not log file contents. Bank statements, supplier invoices, and financial reports are exactly the kind of data UK GDPR covers tightly; our DPA documents the processing relationship for compliance.

Limitations and edge cases

Scanned PDFs: the engine has no text to extract. Run our OCR PDF tool first to add a real text layer.
Loose layouts: PDFs where text is positioned to look like a table but has no underlying table structure often produce messy output. Clean up in Excel.
Merged cells and nested tables: hit-and-miss. Simple flat tables convert cleanly; complex layouts may fragment.
Tables spanning multiple pages: may convert as separate sheets or as one sheet with the header repeating; depends on the source.
Formulas: not preserved. PDFs store rendered values, not formulas. Ask for the source spreadsheet if you need the maths.
Password-protected PDFs: not supported. Use our unlock PDF tool first.

Will my tables be preserved?

If the PDF was generated from a spreadsheet, accounting software, or any source that produced clean table structure, yes. Rows, columns, and cell boundaries come through intact. If the PDF was scanned from paper or built from loose text positioned to look like a table, the conversion is best-effort and you will likely need to clean up the output in Excel.

What kinds of PDFs work best?

Native PDFs exported from Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers, Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent, or any accounting and reporting tool convert almost perfectly. Bank statements from most UK banks (HSBC, Lloyds, Barclays, NatWest, Monzo, Starling) convert well because the statement PDF is generated from a structured source. Scanned PDFs, image-only PDFs, and PDFs with loose text laid out to mimic a table are the hard cases.

Does this work for bank statements?

Yes for the major UK banks if you downloaded the statement as a PDF directly from your online banking (not a scan or screenshot). Monzo, Starling, Revolut, HSBC, Lloyds, Barclays, NatWest, Santander, and Halifax statements all convert cleanly with rows preserved. If your bank only offers scanned PDFs, run them through our OCR PDF tool first to add a real text layer.

Is my PDF uploaded?

Yes, to our UK datacenter. The file is processed by LibreOffice running headless, the .xlsx is returned to you, and both the source PDF and the output spreadsheet are deleted within 5 minutes. We do not log file contents, only file size and conversion duration for billing.

What is the free tier limit?

Why is my Excel file messy?

PDF to Excel is the hardest of all PDF conversions because PDF has no native concept of a table; what looks like a table to a human is actually positioned text. The LibreOffice engine makes intelligent guesses about row and column boundaries, but it cannot always get them right. If the output is messy, the source PDF is usually a scanned image or a tool that laid out text loosely. Try OCRing the PDF first if it is scanned.

How is this different from Smallpdf, iLovePDF, or Adobe?

Output quality for PDF to Excel varies more than for other conversions because the underlying problem is genuinely hard. Adobe Acrobat Pro is generally considered the best, our tool and Smallpdf are close, and iLovePDF is on par for clean source PDFs. Differentiators: UK datacenter, files deleted within 5 minutes (vs 60 min for Smallpdf, 2 hours for iLovePDF, 24 hours for Adobe), no daily task cap on free, and Pro at £9/mo is cheaper than every comparable tier.

Can I get CSV instead of XLSX?

Not directly from this tool yet, but once you have the .xlsx you can open it in Excel, Google Sheets, or Numbers and Save As CSV in one click. CSV output is on the roadmap for a future release.

Does this work for scanned PDF tables?

Not directly. A scanned PDF is just images, so LibreOffice has no text to extract. Run the scan through our OCR PDF tool first to add a real text layer, then convert the OCRed PDF to Excel here. Quality of the final spreadsheet depends on the quality of the original scan and the OCR pass.

What about merged cells or complex layouts?

Merged cells in the source PDF may split into separate cells in the output, or the merge may be preserved depending on how the PDF encoded the layout. Nested tables, tables that span multiple pages with repeating headers, and tables with row banding are all hit-and-miss. Test on a small sample of your file format before bulk-converting.

How long does conversion take?

Most 1 to 5 page PDFs finish in 3 to 8 seconds. A 20-page report takes around 15 to 20 seconds. Table-heavy PDFs are slower than text-heavy PDFs because the engine spends more time inferring cell boundaries.

Will hyperlinks and formulas be preserved?

Hyperlinks usually survive the conversion as clickable links in Excel. Formulas do not. PDFs store rendered values, not the formulas behind them, so any cell that was a formula in the original spreadsheet becomes a static value in the output. If you need the original formulas, ask whoever sent the PDF for the source spreadsheet.

Can I convert just specific pages?
